The Narrow Urban Lot

OK here is the ‘sitch’ (I had a client once say that to me so I’m co-opting the term here) – Lately I’ve become fascinated with urban areas, specifically ‘grungy’ commercial districts with an industrial aesthetic. Procuring a lot in one of these districts to build a small residential unit seems intriguing (hey it’d probably be cheaper; you’d just have to make sure not to be next to an auto repair/smog shop or some business that emits noxious fumes). Of course the facade would have to be made of materials that can withstand the occasional undesirables (No offense William Whyte) – Hence this design has a front fence made of cor-ten (I’m already rusted and looking weathered!), walls of CMU (sloppy mortar joints? No problem! Again it’s that whole industrial aesthetic) and corrugated GSM panels (spray paint away! OK not really). But once you get past the front gate you are met with a small oasis (Japanese garden really). Inside the home is only 30′ wide. There is a two story great room overlooking the interior garden/pond atrium beyond. Large kitchen with custom island. Two story Master Bedroom at rear overlooks atrium as well. Second floor contains guest room, billiards loft and office in rear.
