The Cabin DADU
Implausible Bluff Location

Another small concept house that is ideal as a DADU or Cabin. Based on a compact 20’x20’ footprint, this small residence features internal stairs, a lower level bedroom / bath and a second floor living / dining / kitchen great room (a reverse floor plan e.g. living areas on top take advantage of views) Vaulted ceilings help create a larger sense of space while the copious fenestration provides for much daylight.

Clad in a standing seam metal roof and walls, this home is ideal for snowy locations. Deep overhangs provide needed shade during the summer season while not obstructing sunlight during low-angle sun in winter seasons. Massive walls provide an opportunity for high energy efficiency through extremely thick insulation. The T&G wood eaves continue to the interior spaces providing for a cabin-esque feeling inside and instilling a seamless visual connection between the outdoors and indoors. Traditional wood details contrast and soften the modern aesthetic of the standing seam metal.

There are two variants; Cabin A and B.

On the exterior, version ‘A’ takes cues from Bavarian mountain cabins by incorporating flower boxes at the second floor awning windows (see picture above), while version ‘B’ includes a balcony.

Both designs incorporate a large centrally located cabinet that can be customized for individual needs (see animation below). Version ‘A’ contains a drop-down Murphy style bed whereas version ‘B’ includes a TV/Media center with rear storage.

Customizable central cabinet: TV/Media or Murphy Bed
